Presiding Bishop Michael B. Curry: Sermon for Pentecost

Sunday, May 23, 2021

“Love is ecumenical. Love is interfaith. Love is bipartisan. Love is multiethnic. Love embraces and includes us all.”

Presiding Bishop Michael B. Curry celebrated Pentecost Sunday with us yesterday, reminding us that Pentecost is an extension of the incarnation and a revolution of the Spirit and love.

Rev. Kurt C. Wiesner: Like Trees planted by streams of water, bearing fruit in due season.(Psalm 1)

Sunday, May 16, 2021

The lectionary points us towards Pentecost, unified in love and a vision of the world that differs from humanity's misplaced emphasis. (John's 17th chapter).

Sunday, May 9, 2021

Rev. Kurt C. Wiesner: Good Friday reflection

Friday, April 2, 2021

We read Mark's Gospel for Good Friday, which is my preference because we do not lose the Roman authority and responsibility for Jesus' death. Only the Romans had the desire and the power to crucify Jesus.

Mark tells us that Pilate ultimately condemns Jesus, “wishing to satisfy the crowd.”
This is a consistent theme in Mark’s Gospel. Like Herod before him who executes John the Baptist not because he wants to but because he is caught in a drunken oath, Pilate is an opportunistic leader who seeks only what serves his power, rather than any moral backbone to “do what is right.” Pilate KNOWS Jesus is innocent, but he is perfectly willing to condemn him when it is in Pilate’s best interest. Pilate’s leadership is a sham compared to the way Jesus used his power.

Rev. Kurt C. Wiesner: Palm Sunday

Sunday March, 28, 2021

Rev. Kurt reflected on three readings in our Palm Sunday service from the Gospel of Mark that lead to Jesus being crucified by the Romans:

Mark 11:1-11 (The procession into Jerusalem)

Mark 12:28-34 (The scribe's question of Jesus)

Mark 14:1-14 (A woman anoints Jesus)

An exploration of John 12:20-33 (and supported by Jeremiah 31:31-34) leads to our call to ‘show Jesus/show God’ in all that we do, and also declares that the crucifixion "judges the world", but maybe not in the way we have been told.

Rev. Kurt uses material from Charles L. Campbell, found in ‘Feasting on the Word Year B, Volume 2’. (Campbell used material from Walter Wink in 'Engaging the Powers: Discernment and Resistance in a World of Domination'.) Thanks to Stefani who read the readings.

Rev. Kurt C. Wiesner: God’s Love Revealed

Sunday, March 14, 2021

Using Numbers 21:4-9 as a base story, the Gospel of John claims that the cross reveals God's love for the world (John 3:14-21).

Rev. Kurt uses considerable materials from The Rev. David Lose.

Rev. Kurt C. Wiesner: Taking on the System

Sunday, March 7, 2021

Using John 2:13-22 to look at The Gospel of John's theological lens concerning Jesus.

Rev. Kurt read source material from The Rev. Canon Rich Simpson, whose full reflection is found at https://rmsimpson.blogspot.com/

Rev. Kurt C. Wiesner: Carrying Life for All

Sunday, February, 28, 2021

Jesus reacts to Peter's reaction and insists that the trajectory is not self-centered nor self-enriching. Based on Mark 8:31-38, read by Kristy Muday, with consideration of the text before it.

Rev. Kurt C. Wiesner: Temptation Context

Sunday, February 21, 2021

The homily comes in the setting of today's 11 am service, "A Sacred Meal for a Dispersed Community."

Meg Brady read first from The Gospel of Mark, 1:9:15 (Service adapted from the Book of Occasional Services "Agape for Maundy Thursday" for use in the Episcopal Church of New Hampshire.)

Rev. Kurt C. Wiesner: Blessed Ashes in the Courtyard

Wednesday, February 17, 2021

'As promised, I blessed ashes in the courtyard, thanks to my assistant. Ashes are now available for pickup in the St. Paul's circle drive. The snow is deep and coming down, so please use good judgment as to whether or not to pick them up. Lent remains holy with or without ashes.'

Rev. Kurt C. Wiesner: Controlling the Moment

Sunday, February 14, 2021

This video reflection is on a subject I'm still processing: the connection between Peter's (and James' and John's) inability to use the power offered to them, and the past week's events concerning controversy at Washington National Cathedral and yesterday's acquittal in the impeachment trial. For reference, the text is Mark 9:2-9 and 2 Kings 2:1-12. The plan is to write more on this later.

~Rev. Kurt

Rev. Kurt C. Wiesner: The Message

Sunday, February 7, 2021

Mark 1:29-39 continues Jesus' beginning of his ministry, a great deal of healing, and an insistence as to what it's all about.

(Also featured: Rev. Kurt's inability to get the word "contemplation" out of his mouth...)

Rev. Kurt C. Wiesner: Two Preachers Begin

Sunday, January 24, 2021

Jonah and Mark's Jesus both begin their ministry with a message of repentance. You might be surprised who's more successful, but there's more to each story as well. (Jonah 3, Mark 1:14-15)

Rev. Kurt C. Wiesner: Tween Christmas Story

Sunday, January 3, 2021

Luke's story of 12 year old Jesus is our 2nd Sunday of Christmas story.

Sunday, Dec. 27

dayafterxmas.jpg

It’s the third day of Christmas and the first Sunday in Christmas.

John’s Gospel takes center stage with echos of the opening vision of Genesis: “In the beginning was the word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” The Word is eternal, from the beginning.  Then the Christmas statement: “And the Word became flesh and lived among us.”

Then the primary metaphor of love:  “and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.” And finally the Gospel writer gives the metaphor flesh as well: “It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father’s heart, who has made him known.”

This is the Gospel writer of John’s understanding of what God has done to be fully with us.

Merry Christmas!

The Rev. Kurt C. Wiesner

‘The Reign of Christ’

Sunday, Nov. 22

The final Sunday of the Church year uses the Matthew 25:31-46 story of the “Separation of the Sheep and the Goats” to illustrate what is often called “Christ the King Sunday”, and why that might not be the best of ideas.

The sermon also references Luke 16:19-31, the entry on The Episcopal Church website on “Christ the King” from the book “An Episcopal Dictionary of the Church”, and Diana Butler Bass’ series “Being Grateful in Difficult Times” which is a self-study class that can be found on the Convergence website https://faithlead.org/ that was offered in small group virtually at St. Paul’s.

‘Two Takes on Talents’

Sunday, Nov. 15

The Jesus parable found in Matthew 25:14-30 has at least two fundamentally different ways of understanding the point, which makes it another brilliant example of Jesus, the storyteller.

Matthew's Ten Bridesmaids story may ultimately help us resist simplistic answers for going forward.

"Know and Tell the Stories"

A sermon responding to the beginning of the Book Exodus (1:8-2:10)

Good morning, this is Rev. Kurt. It's moving weekend for my family (in town, remaining in SLC), so I am going to allow myself a non-video Sunday. Instead, I am going to re-share my old blog post

Yes, it's the one where Jesus essentially calls a woman a dog.I've had more comments on this one over the years than any other post, and I even added a reply this morning.
